If the shopping cart down at your local supermarket included a built-in register, credit-card and check processing terminal; could calculate your order's shipping costs anywhere in the country (or world) and could hold 100s or even 1000s of items ... then perhaps the term "shopping cart" would be a more accurate analogy for most of today's ecommerce products. (but then, it's only an analogy, isn't it?)
Today's shopping carts (or "ecommerce systems") do all of the above and more ... providing features like searchable databases, order tracking, language and currency support, html administration, and of course: secure ordering. With hundreds of companies sprouting up every year in this booming market; the prices, quality, and design concepts vary wildly, resulting in both incredibly great values as well as some which border on, well... we hate to use the term, "ripoff." Suffice it to say: "when buying a shopping cart - it pays to shop around."
